چکیده

Novaluron (Rimon 10 EC), a novel insect growth regulator, could play an important role in future management programs for Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say). Studies were conducted to determine the potential of Colorado potato beetle to develop resistance to novaluron before its widespread use in Colorado potato beetle management. Second instars of an imidacloprid-resistant Colorado potato beetle strain exhibited reduced susceptibility (2.5-fold) to novaluron. The toxicity of novaluron to this strain was synergized by S,S,S-tributyl phosphorotrithioate (DEF) but not by piperonyl butoxide (PBO), suggesting that esterase-based detoxification mechanisms were responsible for novaluron resistance. Bioassays with treated potato foliage found that a single low- or medium-rate novaluron application was highly persistent under field conditions, resulting in up to 85% mortality of second instars 5 wk after treatment. Thus, intense selection pressure for novaluron-resistant Colorado potato beetle may continue long after population densities have been reduced below an economic threshold level. In a national survey, the susceptibility of second instars to a novaluron diagnostic dose was determined for 27 different field populations collected from six Canadian provinces in summer 2003. Despite no previous exposure to novaluron, mortalities at the diagnostic dose ranged from 55 to 100%. Although novaluron has several characteristics that should delay resistance development in insect pests, these results highlight the need for judicious use of the compound in management of Colorado potato beetle.

Field efficacy of novaluron for control of Colorado potato beetle (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) on potato

Field trials were conducted in 2003 and 2004 to assess the effectiveness of novaluron (Rimon 10EC), a benzoylphenyl urea chitin synthesis inhibitor, for Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say), management on potato. Foliar applications of novaluron did not significantly reduce numbers of L. decemlineata adults, egg masses, or first instar larvae, but second–fourth instars were g...

Resistance to neonicotinoid insecticides in field populations of the Colorado potato beetle (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae).

BACKGROUND Neonicotinoid insecticides were first used commercially for Colorado potato beetle [Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say), Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae] control in the United States in 1995, and since then have been critical for management of this pest. Field populations from the northeastern and midwestern United States were tested from 1998 to 2010 for susceptibility to imidacloprid and thi...

Combining engineered resistance, avidin, and natural resistance derived from Solanum chacoense bitter to control Colorado potato beetle (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae).

The Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), is the most destructive insect pest of potato, Solanum tuberosum (L.), in North America. Avidin sequesters available biotin, thereby causing abnormal growth and development of insects. We expressed avidin in two potato lines: MSE149-5Y, a susceptible potato line, and ND5873-15, a line with S. chacoense-deri...

Baseline toxicity and field efficacy of metaflumizone on Colorado potato beetle (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae).

Baseline toxicity levels to a novel semicarbazone insecticide, metaflumizone were established for 25 field populations of Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata Say (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae),from North America. Excluding the susceptible laboratory strain, 50% lethal concentrations of metaflumizone ranged from 0.57 to 1.31 ppm, while response slopes ranged from 1.92 to 4.24 (average...

Effect of insecticide management history on emergence phenology and neonicotinoid resistance in Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae).

Emergence phenology and fitness attributes of several Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say), populations were measured under field and greenhouse conditions. Anecdotal observations by producers and pest managers in many locations of the upper Midwest increasingly suggested that select populations of Colorado potato beetle were emerging over a longer period in the spring and we...
